Source website link In a society where much of human life is based on the pursuit of personal advancement, the past has a lingering effect on the present. Whether it is a painful memory of a traumatic event or the fond recollection of a happy memory, the past makes its presence known in the present. Each and every moment of a person’s life has an effect on the present, no matter how distant it may be in time.

The consequences of the past are usually both tangible and intangible. The tangible effects may include the physical evidence of a traumatic experience, such as a scar or an emotional disorder experienced after surviving a traumatic event. The intangible consequences may include the psychological effects caused by the negative experiences, such as a diminished self-esteem or the feeling of anxiety when in a certain place or situation.

Although it is often unclear how exactly the past is influencing the present, its effect is undeniably present in our day to day lives. The impact of the past can manifest in many ways, from a person’s lingering fears and worries to the successes or failures they have experienced. The past cannot be dismissed or forgotten, yet its influence can be mitigated with a conscious effort to confront and overcome its power over the present.

Issues associated with the past, such as grief and unprocessed trauma, often linger and hinder a person’s ability to truly live in the present. It is important to reflect on what has happened in the past and create a narrative for ourselves that allows us to move forward without carrying the weight of our old experiences. By recognizing the root of the negative effects, a person can gain an understanding of how the past is operating in their present and take an active role in attempting to change their current outlook.

Although the circumstances of our personal pasts can often seem insurmountable, it is important to remember that the present is largely determined by those very same influences of the past. There’s always a pastness operating in the present and it has effects and consequences that each of us must confront and work to overcome.
