The Secretary informed that the domestic production is expected to start in the next 6-8 months. The Indian semiconductor industry is small in comparison to its global peers. Currently, the market is dominated by the likes of Samsung and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). This has caused India to be dependent on its foreign counterparts, as it spends billions of dollars every year in the imports of electronic components.
He added that the government is taking all possible efforts to establish the semiconductor industry in the country. It is providing incentives for the development of the semiconductor manufacturing sector that include setting up chip fabrication units (Fab) at a 0% duty, and access to finance at low-interest rates.
In addition to this, the government is planning to establish semiconductor wafer fabrication units in multiple states. These units will be responsible for developing and producing the silicon chips used in various electronic products. The new moves made by the government are expected to reduce the dependency on foreign rivals, and the imports of electronic components by offering the local industry a much-needed boost.
The Secretary concluded the address by saying that this initiative will offer immense opportunities to Indian companies in terms of marketing, technology, and innovation. It is expected that the local semiconductor market will soon become a major player in the global market and compete with the likes of Samsung and TSMC.
