Resource connection The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, in collaboration with the All India Council of the Blind (AICB), organized a three day long workshop for visually impaired girls from Rajasthan under its Accessible India Campaign.
The workshop aimed to guide the visually impaired girls on how to use assistive technologies, leverage online resources, develop confidence and generate job opportunities. The girls were guided about the use of Screen Reader and Software Computers, which help them craft their resumes, look for jobs, read emails and even articles.
The girls also underwent an activity-based training which was led by AICB trainers. This activity-based training helped them in developing their mobility skills, preparing for interviews and to make use of digital platforms. It was a great opportunity for the girls to get to know more about self-employment, advocacy and to find out how they can utilize accessible technologies better. The students were also trained to work upon skill development that help them to focus on their cooking, teaching and other skills.
Apart from the training, the workshop also included resource sharing sessions led by people with disabilities. The resource sharing sessions revolved around employment and self-help services, social security schemes and industrial relocation services.
The workshop has received great response from the participants, and AICB is looking to replicate a similar modus operandi to empower more working age girls in the rural areas. With the Accessible India Campaign, the workshop has imbibed confidence in the visually impaired girls towards achieving their desired career goals.
