Dell expert offers insight on Gen Z tech gap

Supply link The digital divide has been a long-standing issue in America, but the recent coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated the gap between those who have access to the latest technology and those who don’t. Nowhere is this more pronounced than among Generation Z, the first digital natives who, in many cases, lack access to the technology that could help change their lives. But help is at hand.

Recent research by Dell Technologies found that 94 percent of Gen Z think access to technology can help them reach their full potential and create a more equitable world. Michael Dell, CEO of the company that bears his name, believes Gen Z’s potential can be unlocked through the power of technology.

“We must invest in technology to bridge the gap in access to opportunities,” he said recently. “Computer literacy is not an option; it’s a necessity for future career advancement, and will help create a global workforce equipped with powerful problem-solving skills.”

Dell is ramping up efforts to bridge the tech gap. The company’s Global Social Impact program works to empower students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds by providing them with access to the technology they need to succeed. Through its Dell Powering the Possible initiative, the company provides laptops and tablets to students in need, as well as free internet connectivity and digital literacy training.

Additionally, Dell has been working with organizations like the Boys & Girls Clubs of America to reach more students in need. Through this partnership, Dell is providing 65,000 club members across the country with PCs and internet access.

It’s estimated that over 70 million Americans currently lack basic access to technology, making these initiatives even more important. “We’re helping bridge the digital divide,” Dell said. “We’re making sure that no one is left behind.”

If we are to ensure that the next generation can succeed, we must make sure that all students have access to the technology they need to learn and grow. Dell is setting the example for other tech companies to follow, and the effort to bridge the tech gap is well underway.
