Supply backlink Students at Colorado’s Harry Strand Elementary School have joined together in an effort to preserve the culture, language, and traditions of the Ute Indian Tribe.

The school, located in the Ute Indian Tribe’s homeland of Ignacio, is home to the Ute language program. The program seeks to preserve and revitalize the tribe’s culture and language, while celebrating the unique history of the Ute people.

In order to achieve its goal, the Ute language program has implemented interactive initiatives to engage students in the study and practice of the Ute language. Each day, staff and students focus on a core language element, such as numbers, pronouns, or names of plants and animals. Using both English and Ute, teachers provide students with lessons to learn vocabulary and sentence structure. After lessons, teachers lead games and activities to give students a chance to use the language they have learned.

In addition to language instruction, the program also offers workshops on Ute cultural traditions. Staff and students learn about different topics, such as traditional story-telling, native songs, and hide tanning. The workshops emphasize respect for their tribal ancestors and give participants an appreciation of Ute history and culture.

The Harry Strand Elementary School staff hope that the Ute language program will create a foundation for the tribe’s language and culture to continue and to be passed down to future generations. By offering instruction and experiences dedicated to Ute language, they strive to give students the opportunity to form a deep connection with their heritage.
