One such teacher, in Virginia, is looking to go a step further. Atieh Saadat brings her enthusiasm for the topics in her classroom to the virtual world, by highlighting the joyous sides of the African American experience.
For Saadat, this means selecting mediums such as music, art, and comedy to really drive her message home. From using Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech set to a hip-hop beat to showing documentaries on celebrated African American authors and leaders, Saadat helps to open up rich, uplifting conversations with her students.
It is her belief that by delving deeper into the subject of race, her pupils are able to further understand their own roots and feelings of pride in their identity. This approach has often seen Saadat include childhood favorites such as The Wiz Live, a modern-day reimagining of the classic The Wizard of Oz featuring an all-Black cast, into the course content.
These applications, she says, are her way of helping her students to recognize how the African American experience extends beyond the negative narratives that often accompany it and to embrace its beauty and history in every way.
By providing her students with positive, thought-provoking materials via NPR, Saadat is setting the path for others to truly experience, not just understand, the African American experience.
