Mitsy Flores, an eighth grade math teacher at Milcreek High School, has become a popular sensation on the popular video platform for her video about her students’ struggle with hunger.
“I am a teacher at a predominately low-income family school and every day there are many students that come to school without money for breakfast, lunch or snacks,” Flores wrote at the top of the post.
The video has since been viewed 2.6 million times, resulting in $30,000 being donated by viewers to secure meals for the school’s lunchroom.
“I just wrote a caption of how I felt and how other teachers and schools are going through the same problem,” Ms. Flores said. “I never expected it to blow up like this.”
She explained that students in the Salt Lake City area do not qualify for free meals, and many are left in a difficult situation.
Ms. Flores’ inspirational video is a beautiful testament to her commitment and compassion for her students, and it’s a reminder to people across the country of the importance of supporting our local schools.
“I’m just so blessed and so grateful to be a part of this amazing community,” Flores said. “People’s hearts are so good. People did this out of the goodness of their hearts and that’s why I’m so grateful.”
The school’s principal, Chris Johnson, said that Ms. Flores’s video has shone a light on the food insecurity facing children in the area.
“This is an issue that faces a lot of our students, and it’s because of [Ms. Flores] we’re able to get this support,” Mr. Johnson said.
