Resource website link The National Presidential Scholars Program recently recognized 46 Career and Technical Education (CTE) students and teachers for their outstanding achievements in CTE-related fields.
The awards are presented annually by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE) to CTE students and teachers who demonstrate outstanding achievement and leadership. The program honors two students and two teachers in each state and the District of Columbia, plus additional honorees in 16 career clusters, such as Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources; Business, Management, & Administration; and Information Technology.
Students and teachers honored with this award have shown a commitment to CTE’s mission of preparing high school and college-aged youth through a career-focused curriculum. According to OVAE, award recipients have “demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and leadership skills in CTE-related fields through their high school curricula and/or additional CTE experiences.”
The 2016 student honorees included 18 females and 28 males, ranging in age from 16 to 22. They come from 21 states across the country, plus the District of Columbia. One of the recipients is Rebecca Coleman, a student at Suburban High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She is one of 13 new Presidential Scholars in Business, Management, & Administration, and has been involved in numerous CTE courses in business, finance, and marketing.
The 2016 teacher honorees also reflect a commitment to advancing CTE. These include eight instructors from various career and technical centers and high schools throughout the United States. These honorees have dedicated their time, energy, and expertise to helping their students succeed in CTE fields. One instructor recognized this year was Harriet Yates, a CTE teacher from Randolph Career and Technical Center in Randolph, Massachusetts. Yates has been a leader in the field of CTE, introducing new initiatives in the classroom while providing students with the support they need to succeed.
The recognition received by these students and teachers is a testament to the important role CTE plays in helping to equip young people with the skills and knowledge needed to lead successful lives. Each year, the Presidential Scholars Program provides an opportunity to honor students and teachers who have demonstrated success in this field.
