Resource connection Two NYC School Librarians Earn ALA Love My Librarian Award
The American Library Association (ALA) recently awarded its “Love My Librarian” awards to two school librarians from New York City: Mary Woxland, a librarian at Queens International High School, and Lysa Alvarado, a librarian at the Bronx High School for Writing and Communication Arts.
The ALA’s Love My Librarian award recognizes public, school, and college librarians from all over the United States who have made extraordinary contributions to their libraries, their schools, and their communities. These two New York City school librarians have earned the award through their tireless efforts to bridge gaps of access, knowledge, and opportunity for their students.
“At the heart of every great school library is a great librarian,” said ALA President Roberta Stevens in a statement. “Mary Woxland and Lysa Alvarado are shining examples of the incredible work school librarians do every day for their students, faculty and communities. They are beacons of light in our public schools and it is an honor to have them win the Love My Librarian award.”
Mary Woxland has been the librarian at Queens International High School for over 10 years. Under her tenure, she created an interactive learning space where English language learners could work towards their high school diplomas. Additionally, Woxland also organized events to promote the use of the library and literacy activities throughout the school.
Lysa Alvarado has been the librarian of the Bronx High School for Writing and Communication Arts for six years. Under her leadership, the library has become a central hub of collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. She has also organized events such as book fairs and writing contests to promote reading and literacy.
Now in its ninth year, the ALA Love My Librarian Award has honored almost 230 librarians from across the United States. Mary Woxland and Lysa Alvarado join a distinguished group of individuals recognized for their work as school librarians.
