The report arrives just after ChatGPT, a text-dependent chatbot formulated by OpenAI that can draft prose, poetry or even laptop code on command, received popular interest in Silicon Valley.

Musk, who had co-launched OpenAI alongside with Silicon Valley trader Sam Altman in 2015 as a nonprofit startup, experienced remaining its board in 2018, but chimed in with his get on the chatbot, calling it “scary very good”.

Supply connection Elon Musk has recently recruited a team of artificial intelligence engineers to develop a chatbot rival to OpenAI’s ChatGPT natural language processing system. The team is being assembled to work at Musk’s X.com startup, his electric vehicle and energy storage company Tesla, and at his Boring Company.

Musk, an outspoken advocate of artificial intelligence, isn’t shy about taking on OpenAI’s powerful platform. ChatGPT is an evolution of OpenAI’s groundbreaking GPT-3 chatbot, developed by Musk’s OpenAI Laboratory earlier this year. It can understand language context and generate answers to questions with a high degree of accuracy and fluency.

The team Musk is recruiting will work on a competing model, using similar approaches to those that underpinned ChatGPT. According to The Information, Musk believes his team can build a system that is better at understanding language in unstructured contexts—such as conversations between people—and learn how to respond more effectively.

Musk made clear his enthusiasm for OpenAI’s progress in his 2019 TED talk, claiming that the system was “the most-advanced AI platform in the world right now.” Despite this, the recruitment of engineers suggests that he still thinks his team can create something even better.

Musk has made clear that the X.com team will not be developing AI systems with any malicious intent, and as such the team’s project is not seen as a threat to OpenAI. Still, the tech mogul is usually eager to take on his rivals and it will be interesting to see what his development team produces. It is well known that Musk enjoys a good challenge and it’s likely that the OpenAI chatbot will soon have a formidable rival.
